Essential Oil Beauty 101: The Do’s and Don’ts

Do:

First lesson is to always do your research, Essential oils are concentrated and volatile plant extracts through a distillation process to extract the beneficial or ”essence” of the plant, hence the name essential oils. But believe it or not there are around 300 commercially available essential oils that boast different health and lifestyle benefits.  

Do:

Understanding your skin type is very important before you introduce essential oils into your skincare regimen.

Each skin type has a different reaction and expected results, if you are not sure of your skin type ask your skin care therapist or dermatologist for help.  

Don’t:

Don’t use essential oil during day time, when exposed to the sun essential oils are a major cause of hyper-pigmentation, so leave to night time and make sure you use sun screen in the morning.

Do:

Do a skin test or as other people call it a, patch test, before using any essential on your skin to avoid any allergic reaction.

Do:

Do keep application of essential oils from your eyes, if you accidently get it in your eyes flush it with milk first.

Don’t:

Don’t store essential oils near the sun or heat; they are better stored in a dry, dark place, it is also better to store them in tinted glass bottles.

Do:

Do change your pillow case more often while using essential oils. Fabric tends to collect dirt, skin cells and sweet throughout night, you don’t want to end up with sleeping on a germ and bacteria directly on your skin.

Do:

Start your morning skin care regimen with washing your face and removing any leftover oil with micellar water to avoid clogging your pores.

Don’t:

Don’t use essential oils on your skin if you are pregnant or asthmatic unless advised by a qualified physician.
